Self-Care Ritual - Dry Body Brushing

At Mikki Auld, we’re always looking for ways to improve our health and wellbeing. To help us do this, something the team has been experimenting with (and loving!) of late is dry body brushing.

So what is dry body brushing? It’s a daily health and self care practice that involves ‘brushing’ the skin. Usually done before showering, dry body brushing offers a myriad of health benefits, both internally and externally.

On a physical level, dry body brushing helps to remove dry and dead skin, gifting the skin a gentle exfoliation (goodbye ghastly Winter dryness!) It also reduces cellulite and tones the muscles.

 

On a deeper level, dry body brushing helps clean the lymphatic system, aiding in detoxification and waste removal. The skin is our body’s largest organ and as such, absorbs so many of the toxins we are surrounded by and come into contact with on a daily basis - such as makeup, pollution and cleaning products. Dry body brushing is an effective way of counteracting these harsh environmental impacts.

Dry body brushing is also reported to rejuvenate the nervous system, stimulate circulation, increases immunity and aid digestion.

 

If you haven’t heard of dry body brushing before, you might be wondering if it’s just some crazy new age fad. But it’s not. In fact, the practice of dry body brushing has been a ritual that's been performed all over the world for centuries. Used in ancient Greek, Egyptian, Japanese, Native American and Ayurvedic cultures, dry body brushing really is a health and beauty practice that has proven its benefits and stood the test of time.

Dry body brushing is something that can be very easily incorporated into your daily beauty routine. Here’s how you do it:

 

  1. Grab yourself a good quality dry body brush from your local health food store. We suggest purchasing a brush that has natural plant bristles, as opposed to synthetic bristles, as natural bristles won’t scratch the skin (plus, natural is always better!)

  2. The best time to body brush is after you undress, but before you hop into the shower. Using a circular motion, start brushing your body at your feet and move upwards. You always want to be brushing towards your heart so keep this in mind as you brush the different parts of your body. Avoid your face and any areas of your body that are wounded or sensitive.
