Mikki Auld Hairdressing: A Sustainable Salon
Have you ever been getting your hair foiled, and whilst sipping tea and daydreaming, you suddenly have a thought.. What on earth happens to the billions of foils once they've been used to brighten my locks? Where exactly do all of those hair clippings go? Or the excess hair colour? What about all of the old and faulty hair styling equipment? Does it just get thrown into the bin? Well sadly, the most common answer would have been a depressing one. The majority of all salon waste would have ended up in one bin (and eventually landfill) and the excess hair dye, down the sink. Thankfully, roughly eight years ago, one couple decided that enough was enough and set out to change the wasteful ways of the Australian hairdressing industry.
Sustainable Salon Founders, Paul Frasca and Ewelina Soroko, had a plan to make salon waste history and so in the name of waste research, embarked on a four month journey across the country. After visiting close to 200 hairdressing salons, they discovered that the majority of all waste had nowhere to go and estimated that Australian salons alone were sending 1.5 million kilograms of aluminium to landfill every year. Not to mention, the amount of paper and packaging that wasn't being recycled and the levels of excess product that was being washed down the sink and polluting our waterways. Horrified and as determined as ever, Paul and Ewelina created Sustainable Salons roughly two years later.
Sustainable Salons is a company that not only recycles but repurposes 95% of all salon waste. What's more, they provide job opportunities to the disadvantaged and disabled and donate 100% of their proceeds to Oz Harvest to provide meals for the homeless. Sustainable Salons has changed the direction of hairdressing in only six short years and during this time, they've encouraged thousands of salons across Australia to jump on board. We are super proud to be a part of such a wonderful movement and really hope we can inspire not only our fellow hair salons but also our clients, to become more waste conscious and aware of their environmental impact.
So let's talk about what Sustainable Salons do...
Let's start with your hair clippings. Sustainable Salons turn hair clippings into "Hair Booms" which are used to soak up oil spills off our coastlines and around the Great Barrier Reef. One hair boom has the ability to absorb 3 litres of oil in roughly 60 seconds and each boom can be used up to five times. The oil that has been collected from these booms can then be extracted and repurposed.
Thinking of having a big chop? Your pony tail will be sent to New Zealand and will be created into a wig for children living with alopecia.
Aluminium foil, cans, packaging and colour tubes are donated to non-for-profit organisations and are from there repurposed.
Peroxides, tints and lightening powders are placed into a chemicals bucket and are turned back into water which is then used for the building of roads and other infrastructure.
Plastic packaging, bags and bottles are used to create park benches and outdoor furniture, as well as underground sheeting for the NBN.
Used hair tools and electrical equipment will be broken down and all valuable parts will be repurposed.
Every dollar that is collected by Sustainable Salons is then donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for those in need. They provide more than 2000 meals every month!
For us to participate in the Sustainable Salons program we require a donation of $2 which will automatically be added to your bill at the end of your service with us.
